In April 2009 an outbreak of human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) was discovered in North America, and cases are being found in a growing number of states and countries. The World Health Organization has increased its alert level to reflect the spread of the outbreak, and health and government officials have been working to assess the spread and severity of this flu.
The American Red Cross is monitoring the developing situation with this outbreak and is in close contact with federal and state officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Homeland Security.

Learn about pandemic flu prevention
With the continuing presence of H1N1 (Swine flu), the public is encouraged to learn more about how to prepare for and prevent the flu. The local American Red Cross chapter, in cooperation with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), offers speakers to help educate the public about pandemic flu, a flu that spreads easily around the world and causes serious illness and death. Registered nurses and health educators Saundra Carmichael and Fran Long are available to make free presentations and provide educational materials about pandemic flu. For information or to schedule a speaker for your business, civic group, or church call Faye Dorman, SC DHEC at 915-8882 or the Red Cross at 477-0020.
