Bloodstock
2009
Red Cross to Award Two Scholarships This Summer
Summer is a time for students to relax, have fun with friends and spend time with family. But, students can also use their free time to help out in their community. That’s why the American Red Cross is offering an opportunity for two scholarships this summer to students who participate in its Bloodstock program.
To qualify, students must plan and organize a blood drive between May 1 and August 31, 2009 that collects a minimum number of pints of blood. A $2,000 scholarship will be given away to a student whose drive collects at least 50 pints of blood, and to qualify for a $1,000 scholarship, at least 35 pints must be collected. Winners of the scholarships will be selected at random from qualifying students.
“Last summer, the Red Cross challenged students to help ensure a sufficient blood supply for sick and injured hospital patients,” said Delisa English American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region CEO . “Dedicated students from throughout our community answered the challenge, and two of them were lucky enough to win some funds for college. This is a wonderful example of young people showing they care and making a real difference. We’re hoping to see even greater participation in Bloodstock 2009.”
Not only will Bloodstock give students a chance to earn a scholarship by coordinating successful blood drives this summer, it will also provide them with benefits such as networking opportunities, leadership development skills, and a chance to cultivate many other skills that will last a lifetime.
For more information or to complete an application for a Bloodstock 2009 scholarship, go to
www.redcrossblood.org. Scholarship checks will be addressed to the college or university students are attending.

Give the gift of life . . . give blood.
All blood donated through the
Red Cross comes from volunteer donors -- caring people like you. Each donation is a gift to a patient in need. There is never a charge for blood itself. To cover the expenses of
recruiting, collecting, testing, processing an distributing blood and blood products,
Red Cross charges a processing fee to hospitals. The charge appears on the patient's
hospital bill and is usually covered by health insurance.
Every two seconds, someone receives blood. Each year, more than 120,000 units of blood are collected by
Red Cross to serve patients at 54 hospitals in South Carolina and Georgia.

Am I Eligible to Give Blood?
Most healthy adults can give blood through the American
Red Cross. You meet the basic eligibility requirements if you...
- are at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental
consent)
- weigh at least 110 pounds
- are in good health on the day of the donation
- have no history of exposure to hepatitis or
AIDS
- your last blood donation was at least 56 days
(8 weeks) ago
Certain medications, health problems or conditions may
disqualify you from donating blood. For example, if you are pregnant, or
have a fever when you come in to donate, or have angina, you cannot donate
blood. Call 1-800-GIVE LIFE with any eligibility questions.
Prior to donating, qualified staff will ask you to answer
a series of questions about travel and health. Your responses help
determine if there is any reason that might disqualify you from donating,
such as travel to some countries or certain medical conditions. We will
also take your temperature and pulse, and take a drop of blood from a
finger to determine the iron level in your blood.
