<Meet our 2008 Heroes>         <2007 Heroes>

Please support your local American Red Cross
By Becoming a Hero for the ARC

The concept is VERY simple. Individuals are recruited to raise a minimum of $1,000 through any legal means they choose. Usually, the “Heroes” who are recruited have the ability to involve their employer, church, school, or civic club to support their fund raising efforts.

“Heroes” Responsibilities:
  • Agrees to raise and/or donate a minimum of $1,000
  • Is given the opportunity to have their picture in a full-page ad in The Sun News to receive recognition for their efforts (anonymous donor requests will be honored)
  • Company name and logo on Chapter website

In 2007, the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross:

  • Responded to 190 local disasters; largely residential fires affecting 205 families and 741 local residents; spending $110,500 on emergency food, clothing and shelter for local disaster victims.
  • From first aid, CPR, and AED training to swimming and life guarding, American Red Cross programs helped people lead safer and healthier lives. Some 14,351 individuals learned lifesaving skills through 1,386 classes offered by the chapter.
  • The international tracing program helped 1 local family find relatives with whom they had lost contact because of a natural disaster, war or international conflict.
  • The Red Cross provided 370 emergency communications between those in the Armed Forces and their families and outreach services to an additional 210 members of the military and/or their families.
  • Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Over the last year, local blood drives collected 6,640 units of blood.
  • For 19 years the Chapter has provided Christmas Day dinner to approximately 3,000 residents who would otherwise be without food and/or fellowship on that day.
  • The Chapter -- covering Georgetown, Horry and Williamsburg counties -- provided an annual Christmas toy giveaway for 238 children who lost their homes due to disaster.
